Cross

Form: Genus species ‘Name’ × ‘Name2’ (species in Latin, Name in English or other)

Defined here to indicate an intraspecific hybridization (cross between two varieties or cultivars from the same species).

Cultivar, nickname, trade name

Form: Genus ‘Name’ (Name in English or other (not Latin))

Either an official name given to a cultivated variety, or an informal or commercial name used by collectors or growers.

Hybrid (cultivar)

Form: Genus A × B or Genus A × B ‘Name’ (A and B are either species, varieties, cultivars, crosses, hybrids, or trade names)

Defined here as a cross between two plants that are not from the same species (an interspecific hybrid). Hybrid cultivars are selected plants from a hybrid seed batch.

Species

Form: Genus species (Latin, ending in “i”, “a”, “us”, “um” or “ex”)

A group of individuals that naturally occur together and share common characteristics, formally described by a botanist.

Species variety/species (eco)type/species cultivar

Form: Genus species var. name or Genus species ‘Name’ (species in Latin, Name in English or other)

Naturally occurring (variety/ecotype) or selected (cultivar) subgroup within a species.
